Annotations

I chose to write about this text because in the text is says “We must say or write the right thing in the right way while playing the right social role and to hold the right values, beliefs, and attitudes.” So the text is saying the we have to be perfect all the time and think about every action we take, and most people do not act that way all the time. No one is perfect.

Reading Responses

  1. Why “saying (writing)-doing-being-valuing, believing combinations” is important to Gee is because Gee believes to be successful like in a job interview you need to present yourself in a certain way, if you are extremely qualified for a job maybe you wont get it just because of the way you talked at the interview because maybe you were nervous.
  2. Gee breaks down Discourse into some different types or categories. The difference between a primary and a secondary Discourse according to Gee is that a primary Discourse is one we first use to make sense of the world and interact with others. Secondary Discourse is at a particular place time, brings with it the acquisition of social “goods”. Gee’s distinction between dominant and nondominant discourses is important because they are both secondary Discourses. According to Gee Dominant at a certain time and place, brings acquisition of social “goods”, Nondominant that brings solidarity with a particular social network, but social goods in the society at large.
  3. Why this nonverbal behavior is important to those who would be in the Discourse of business is because the way you feel directly shows through your body, and a person is is powerless is less likely to be as successful compared to a person who is powerful. Cuddy says “..powerful people tend to be, not surprising, more assertive, and more confident, more optimistic.”
